Hedge End lost to Southampton in the semi-final of the Solent Trophy. The scores were tied after 24 boards on 69 points each. However we lost the tie by losing 12-3 points on the 4 play-off boards.
An interesting hand, which cost us the match. I was sitting South with a very powerful hand. The bidding was as follows:
West Pass; North Pass; East 1H; South Db;
West 2H; North 2S; East Pass; South 3NT;
West Pass; North Pass; East Pass
North’s cards were: S K Q x x
H 9 8
D J x x x
C K x x
My cards were; S A x
H A K Q 2
D A K 8 x
C J x x
From my hand, I could count 8 tricks 3 S, 3 H and 2 D. The diamonds looked the best bet to yield the 9th trick with clubs being the danger because of East’s opening bid. There was also the possibility of long hearts with East – however not too long because West had supported them. I won the 1st trick with AH and then played AK of diamonds, West throwing a club on the 2nd diamond. East has a minimum of 8 cards in the red suits and therefore has no more than 5 in the black suits. I played AKQ of spades on which East and West followed and I discarded a club. I then followed with K and Q of H on which surprisingly West followed. East therefore had started with just 4 hearts, 4 diamonds, 3 spades and 2 other unknown black cards – probably A and Q of clubs. I decided to put East in with my last heart sot that she would have to lead up to my J x of diamonds or up to my K x of Clubs. And what happened? West had the last heart, cashed his spade and led a club to take me one off.
East had psyched!
The qualifiers in the Hedge End heat of the pottage were:

· Paul F & Mark A
· Stan C & Jim P
